lencho didn't gain the sympathy because he thought them as a bunch of crooks.

Explanation:

post master first read the letter and laughed at lencho. But later as he was a generous and sound person he decided to help lencho. Them he afforded some of the amount and he asked his post men also to help. Later he took the collected amount and did it in the form of money order and signed it as 'god'. The post master did this because he didn't want to lose lencho faith in god.
