Gulliver’s Travels
(a) Gulliver left his native country on 20th June, 1702 in the ship named ‘Adventure’. It was bound for Surat. But they had to remain at the port because of storm. However, they set sail and passed the straits of Madagascar. The southern wind began to set in. Then, it was followed by a strong wind which took them to a strange part of the world. On 16th June, 1703 they discovered land and found it was a great island. They went in search of fresh water. Gulliver walked alone about a mile. When he returned, he found his men rowing in the boat for life. He was going to call them but he observed a huge creature walking after them in the sea. Gulliver ran in the other direction and climbed up a steep hill. He saw that there were fields which were cultivated. He was surprised that there was about twenty feet high grass growing there. He soon discovered that he had been separated from his shipmates and that place was called Brobdingnag.

(a) Filmnap is one of the most trusted minister of the Emperor of Lilliput. He is the Lord High Treasurer of Lilliput. He had a dislike for Gulliver because the latter was allowed a quantity of meat and drink sufficient for the support of 1728 Lilliputians. Filmnap often looked on Gulliver with a sour countenance. In fact, he wanted that Gulliver should be dismissed from Lilliput. Once, there was a scandal in the country, as a result of it, Filmnap had developed a dislike attitude towards Gulliver as well as his own wife. When Gulliver succeeded in clearing his and his lady’s name, Filmnap was reconciled with his wife. But he remained inimical to Gulliver. He along with Skyresh and a few other dignitaries, conspired against Gulliver. He prepared articles of impeach ment against him for treason and other crimes. These articles showed that Filmnap and others wanted Gulliver to be sentenced to death for these charges.
Three Men in a Boat
 (b) George narrated a very interesting incident, while he, along with his three friends, was sculling a very heavy boat, they noticed a fellow girl walking along the tow path. They were in some deep and absorbing conversation. They were carrying a boat hook between them and attached to it was a tow line without any boat attached to it. It was clear that the tow line was detached from the boat which was apparently left behind in the water. George took the advantage of this situation. He made a loop in the tow line and put it over their mask and then tied up the Sculls, sat down and lit his pipes. The young man and young woman towed those four hulking chaps and a heavy boat upto two miles. On reaching the bank the couple realised the mistake and found that they had left their boat in the middle of the river. The girl recovered from her surprise and said wildly, “Oh, Henry, then where is auntie?”

(b) Jerome describes the singing of a 'comic' song by Herr Slossenn Boschen in a humourous manner. They were a highly cultured party. They attended a party at which there were two students. They had returned from Germany. A lady sang a ballad in Spanish. The two youngmen got up and asked J. if he had heard Herr Slossenn Boschen singing his great German 'comic' song. They said that the song was so funny that the German Emperor had to be carried off to bed.The boys brought Boschen to sing his 'comic' song. J. didn't know German. So, when Boschen sang, he kept his eyes on the two boys . Whatever they did, he did the same thing. Boschen sang seriously rather it was the humour. As they laughed, Boschen's surprise changed into annoyance. He scowled and this made all laugh again. He finished amid a perfect shriek of laughter. He got up and shook his fists. He said that he had never felt so insulted in his life. This was all due to J's following the two students.
