Answer:
Attention is the variety of perceptual processes.
Explanation:
The term attention refers to a variety of perceptual processes that involve the selection and incorporation of specific sensory inputs as part of our conscious experience. The act of listening and concentrating on a certain item, topic, or event in order to achieve the desired goals is referred to as the attention process.
Attention strengthens our attention or consciousness on a specific thing solely, which aids in the clarity or focus on the object being viewed. Attention cannot be considered just a cognitive function because it is influenced by emotions, attitude, interest, and memory.
The process of attention is carried out by our cognitive abilities, but behavioural and emotional elements aid in the selection of important information or stimuli from the environment in order to focus one's consciousness on one event or thing in order to have a clear perception.
There are two types of attention -
- Non-Volitional (Involuntary Attention): This sort of attention does not involve any function of will; instead, it is activated either by instincts, which is why it is called imposed attention or by our emotions, which is why it is called spontaneous non-voluntary attention. Non-volitional attention examples include paying attention to persons of the opposing gender or seeing her wailing child.
- Volitional (Voluntary Attention): Volitional attention requires our intentional effort to arrive at a solution or achieve particular aims. Volitional attention, as opposed to nonvolitional attention, is less spontaneous or automatic. Paying attention when solving a math problem is an example of volitional attention, as is paying attention while answering examination questions.
Some of the properties/ features of attention are as follows:
- Attention is always shifting.
- Our experience is constantly centred on attention.
- It is discriminatory.
- Constant attention is required.
- Paying attention improves object clarity.
- It is unbreakable.
- The restriction of attention is influenced by the relationship between the items.
