Peter Pettigrew was an unregistered animagus ( like Sirius and James) who could take a form of a rat.
In the movies he was played by Timothy Spall.
He was one of the four marauders and he was the tiniest so that he could touch the knot of the Whomping Willow to freeze it. Then Sirius and James could enter the Shreaking Shack in their animagus forms and make the transformation nights for Remus enjoyable.
