THE BRITISH TOWARDS THE SOCIAL EVILS

This chapter gives an insight about the attitude and the policies followed by the

British towards the native women of Tamil Nadu and the process of enacting the

legislations against the social evils faced by the women as discussed in the previous

chapter. The attitude of the British can be understood from the developments that took

place before the enactment of the legislations related to those evils. Therefore, this chapter

will also give an insight into the various developments that took place before the

enactment of the legislations.

The Holy Bible says, the wife hath not power of her own body, but the

This verse from the Bible described the equality between men and women. However,

and oppressive. Katherine Mayo in the book „Mother India‟ said that certain aspects of the

Hindu women life aroused a special curiosity and concern among the British and the

missionaries in India. It was this curiosity and concern that paved the way for various

social legislations
