Let the amount he paid for the notebook be x rupees
CASE 1
price of the pencil box = 10 + x
CASE 2
price of pencil box + x = price of pen + 30
From Case 1,
10 + x + x = Price of pen + 30
2x = Price of Pen + 20 ------(1)
But,
Price of pen + Price of pencil box + Price of notebook = 50
Price of pen = 50 - x - 10 - x
= 40 - 2x
From (1)
2x = 40 - 2x + 20
4x = 60
x = 15
Thus, he paid Rs. 15 for the notebook.
