Let's begin with our speech !!
Respected Teachers and Dear Friends,
Yes, indeed, Indian Democracy has come of age. India today has the world's largest functioning democracy. Seventeen General Elections have been held ever since we proclaimed ourselves a Sovereign, Democratic Republic in January 26, 1950 and gave to ourself a new constitution. Most of the post - Second World War nations that attained independence almost at the same time as India have either become dictatorships or are under martial law or have simply degenerated into anarchies.
There is hardly any semblance of democracy in most of the third world nations. With the exception of 'Costa Rica', no other developing country has enjoyed as long a democratic run since World War II and in the case of 'Costa Rica', it's worth bearing in mind that the country is small, with a GDP per capita six times that of India's. The people of India have proved their ability as mature electorate by ousting well entrenched regimes from power and opting for clear governance, assurance of development and national stability and security. And all this has happened in spite of the typically Indian social phenomenon of caste, creed and religious afflictions.
But the diverse size and heterogeneous character as well as political and regional problems have placed some hurdles in the smooth functioning of democracy. Illiteracy, ignorance and poverty stalk the land. Our politicians still practice the British legacy of divide and rule to achieve their nefarious ends.
From my opinion, In order to make the functioning of democracy more successful, the provision of right to recall people's elected representatives (as it exists in Switzerland) must be incorporated in our system, so that our leaders become more accountable and responsible to the people. Drastic changes in our electoral system must be brought about so that elections are free, fair and impartial in the true sense of the term. The four pillars of democracy legislature, executive, judiciary and the press must be strengthened. The sanctity of these institutions must not be eroded.
