Autobiography of a blackboard.
Hello,I look a mess don’t I ? I was not so when I was fabricated and coated black it took two sturdy men to install my six feet by four feet frame, then the principal asked workmen to crown me with two fluorescent tubes. This took place 10yrs back.
I still remember the day, the principle Dr.Shastri said I was to be the visual aide for the first formers. He called sixth standard students. The batch had Nayana who was the star pupil. Each teacher had her or his won idiosyncrasies. Elvira taught English, no mater clean I was she would dust me and fill me with her large bold writing. Then there was indira who taught science the writing was forceful she used to hurt me when she wrote, but her writing was neat and precise like her. Infact after she wrote on me I really looked elegant. Gauri who taught Hindi her hand was light smooth and flow like her. Then there was Mr.Ramachandra who taught history he never used me! Dr.Niranjan who taught mathematics used to scribble so hard that the chalk broke he then threw the chalk at the kids.
Nayana the class representative cleaned me up every morning. Wrote the date, the strength of the class, the number of absentee’s and the topic for the day. She used to clean out the duster holder and fill in new chalks.
Nayana has passed out of her sixth form; there have been successive monitors and waves of new teachers. With the advent of the flip charts and projectors the strain on me has reduced. Ten years down the line though past my prime I am still capable of fair amount of work.
Mr.Ramachandra has retired and there is Ms.Prathima who has taken over, she believes in field trips and picture projections and has little use for me. Though she does use me more than Mr.Ramachandra, she sticks pictures on me it feels nice and cool in his heat.
Yesterday the 6th formers scribbled a farewell note to Dr.Niranjan on me, for he retired from work. Here comes the new teacher. Hello! This writing is familiar, it gentle..Yet firm..The chalk moves smoothly and the letter slants to right.. Wait a minute yes this confident miss is Nayana, she is the new math’s teacher how time has flown by.
