My interest in computers began at the age of nine years old when I was enrolled in computer classes after school. At that age I have always seen people used computers and I have always wanted the opportunity to use one. To me this was a once in a life-time opportunity hence, I was so excited to join this class. On my first day of class, I was welcomed by my computer studies teacher Mrs. Johnson; she made me feel welcomed and appreciated. I can vividly remember my first topic- “The computer”, she asked us what we thought the computer was and later gave us notes that will give us a basic background of the computer system. I had always loved the way she taught, I can say today that her strategies of teaching were very effective, because other than allowing us to take notes, she allowed us to use software applications to create and uniquely design cards, advertisements and posters. Perhaps one of the reasons why I loved computer classes so much was because I was given an opportunity to do hands on tasks other than sitting in class for the whole day listening to my instructor. I thought this class provided the avenue through which I could just relax, have fun, and learn something new.

The same year of being enrolled into computer classes, my mother bought a desktop computer for my sister and me. I remembered being really excited because not only can I use the computers at school, but I can also come home and use mine when I am given a chance to. I recollect spending hours on the system, learning to type with Mavis Beacon, I also used the techniques taught in class and created cards for my mother and father. I used to show off my skills and pretended that I was a ‘pro’ at using the computer.

Description of experiences at primary school

Moving on to high school system, I was introducing to computer studies in grade seven. This class was theory based, it had no practical sessions, and I thought to myself ‘oh the fun has ended’ it was unfortunate that computer studies class lacked excitement, but I guess, it was worth it because I learnt more about the computer than just manipulating, and interacting with the system. I learnt about the history of computers and the whole architectural make up and design of the computer and as a result I was able appreciate the theoretical aspect of this class.

In the last term of grade nine, each student was given an opportunity to choose at least four areas that they would like to do in grade ten. Alongside English Literature, Biology and Accounts, I selected information technology and Electronic Documents Preparation and Management (EDPM) as my technical areas. I could not imagine completing high school without selecting one of these subjects to be a part of my study. Throughout grade ten and eleven, I have had three teachers who have taught me Information Technology. My first teacher made information technology classes very interesting. She made it her point of duty, to use audio visuals in her lesson executions. She also ensured that her methods of delivery and assessment were diverse so that it catered for our intelligences. My second information technology teacher taught me in grade eleven. Though information technology was not her area of specialization, the principal asked her to teach the ‘2013 CXC Information Technology students’. It was seen that she was trying to do her best in doing her job, but I thought the principal erred when he selected her to teach us CXC I. T.

I can vividly remember when SBA submission date was some months away and the teacher did not know what to do. I could tell several of my classmates were discouraged but I held on to the love that I had for the subject. My third teacher Ms. Foster replaced my second teacher; she restores order and ensured that we got our SBA’s completed and that we were ready for CXC Information Technology. My EDPM teacher Mrs. Edmonson was and excellent teacher. Her strategies of teaching were very effective, I understood what she taught, and her class was also a practical class, in that, everything I did n class was hands on and I can say because of her class I am a n average typist and can type a sentence with speed and accuracy.

All these experiences from primary and high school have created a foundation that has helped me to become a very good Information Technology practice teacher in college. I believe that so far, I am doing well. I admire all my Information technology teachers at college and their level of professionalism, each lecturer has a different tutoring and lecturing strategy, explanation skills, and good instruction delivery skills. I believe that I can covet these good traits because they will of benefit to me in my future endeavors
