Lewis Edson Waterman (1837 - 1901) was the inventor of fountain pens and the founder of Ideal Pen Company.
Legend says that on his last job while trying to sign an insurance contract with a costumer, his fountain pen gave in and leaked all over the contract. In 1883 Waterman improved a fountain pen. Fountain pen of that time had continuous flow on their ink so Waterman and his brother Elijah started doing experiment with different tubes and in the end, the found out that if air is let into an ink reservoir under the force of gravity but slow enough not to cause leaking.
On 12th Feb 1884 Waterman patented fountain pen on his name and, at first, he assembled pens himself. In 1885 he partnered with Asa shipmen and founded the ideal pen but that didn't last. He again tried alone but later needed to raise capital and founded in 1887 Waterman pen company. 1899 he made a modification to the nib of the pen. The problem was the pen is nearly empty, a bubble would form. But, he solved this problem also.
When is Sold His fountain pens, order started coming from all over the country and from abroad. Business went so well that they produced 7 out of 10 pens on the market at the end of 19th century and had to move productions as the business grew.
Waterman company exhibited in the 'Exposition Universalle in Paris in 1900.
