The Autobiography Of The Himalayas
Millions of years ago, I was deep down under the sea. When the surface of earth moved, I emerged out of the water. I am situated in the continent of Asia and I am just like a crown of India. I separate the Indian Subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau. You are right. I am the Himalaya Mountain or the Himalayas. I am among the youngest mountain ranges made up of mostly sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. According to the modern researches, my creation is a result of a continental collusion along the boundary between the European and Indo-Australian Plates.
I comprise over one hundred mountains. I lie in the North India and stretch from West to East. That is from the Indus river valley to the Brahmaputra river valley. Mt Everest, K2, Annapurna and Kanchenjunga are some of the worlds highest peaks found in me. Owing to my enormous size and stretch, I am a natural barrier to the movement of people. Mixing of Indians with the people of Mongolia and China is prevented. This has caused major differences between their lifestyles, customs, traditions and languages.
Most of my peaks are holy among the people of Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists religions. One can find important religious places like Mount Kailasa, Vaishno Devi and Amaranth in me.
Plants and wildlife differs with climate, rainfall, soils and height. The climate ranges from hot at my base to permanent ice and snow at the top. There are about 15,000 glaciers in my range. These glaciers store about freshwater. Some of the worlds major rivers like Ganges, Brahmaputra, Indus, Mekong, Red and Yellow Rivers, Salween, Yangtze and Irrawaddy River arise from me.
By creating a curve, I extend for a distance of about 2400 kilometres in eastward direction from Pamir Knot. Here some of my parallel ranges are Siwaliks, Lesser Himalayas and Greater Himalayas. My system extends little East of the Namcha Barwa Peak, which is located in Tibet. Here the range takes a sharp turn towards South and stretches from Myanmar Mountain systems towards Malaysian Peninsula. Mount Everest, which is the worlds highest peak with an altitude of about 8848 metres, is located in Nepal. My system has 15 peaks.
However, I accept that I have affected the lives of the people in India by large. I stand as a great wall to prevent the cold winds blowing into India. I also help in causing rainfall in India. The melting snow in summer fills up the rivers of North India.
