Automobile are provided with shockers, why?

Cars often travels through unmetalled roads where there are bumps. It would be difficult for a car to transverse such terrain as sudden bumps cause wear and tear in in the axle. Also the journey would become unpleasant. Shockers "absorb " such sudden change in terrain conditions thus the journey is comfortable and no harm is done to the car.
