Automobiles are fitted with a device that shows the distance travelled. Such a device is called an
odometer. A car is driven from New Delhi to Mumbai, the difference between the final reading
and the initial reading of the odometer is 1,550 km.
Suppose you have a road map with a scale of 1 cm representing 200 km. On this map, using the
shortest line, distance between New Delhi and Mumbai is represented by 7 cm.
Read the above passage and answer the following questions:
1. Find the magnitude of displacement between New Delhi and Mumbai with the help of this
road map.
2. What is more relevant to your journey, distance or displacement? Justify.
3. If a car travels from New Delhi to Mumbai and then returns back to New Delhi, what is the
distance covered and displacement covered for the complete journey.

Now look,

Total distance = 1550 km

Now the shortest length between two landmarks is called displacement

given as per scale 1 cm represents 200 km

so if Delhi mumbai displacement is represented by 7 cm

it actually implies displacement of 1400 km

so (i) is answered

2) Displacement because there are several ways by which distance can be travelled but there is only one displacement in linear motion

3) distance is 1550*2=3100 km

displacement = xf - xi = 0
