Autotrophic succession is characterised by early and continued dominance of autotrophic organisms like green plants and begins in predominantly inorganic environment. On the contrary, heterotrophic succession is characterised by early dominance of heterotrophs and begins in a predominantly organic environment.

In heterotrophic succession, the populations of heterotrophic organisms , like bacteria, actinomyctes, and fungi are present in greater quantity in the initial stages.
