If you connect them in series, then the effective resistance, Re, is given by the sum of the individual resistors, thus:
Re= R1+R2+R3+…..+Rn
If you connect the resistors in parallel, the Re is given by:
1/Re=1/R1+1/R2+1/R3+…+1/Rn
In words: the inverse of the effective resistance is given by the sum of the inverse resistance of each individual resistor. For the special case of two resistors in parallel, the effective resistance is the product of the resistance of each resistor divided by the sum of the resistance of the two resistors
