Awadh was annexed on the grounds of

(c) maladministration

Also called mismanagement or misgovernment;

In 1856, the Britishers had annexed Awadh on the grounds of misgovernment ( maladministration) , saying, that they were "obliged by duty" to take over Awadh, in order to free the people there, from the "misgovernment" of the Nawab.

Enraged by the humiliating way, in which their Nawab was deposed, the people of Awadh had joined in the great Revolt, that had broke out in 1857.

Hope it helps!
