Munshi Premchand (pen name) alias Dhanpat Rai Srivastava was an Indian writer and amongst the illustrious Hindustani writers of the initial 20th century. He was a short story writer, dramatist and novelist who penned numerous novels and essays, and hundreds of short stories.  

EXPLANATION:

  • Premchand wrote over 300 short stories and 14 novels, many letters, plays, translations, and essays Several of Premchand's works were translated into Russian and English after his death. However, he was never bestowed with any awards.
  • But there were a few recognition that he had got. In the year 1936, sometime before his death, he was nominated as the 1st President of the Progressive Writers' Association, Lucknow.
  • The Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters, set-up the Premchand Fellowships in his honour in the year 2005. It is given to persons of eminence in the field of culture from SAARC countries. On 31st July 2016, Google exhibited a Google doodle, honouring Premchand’s 136th birthday.
