Where the hours of the day are few,
And the nights are so long in winter
That they cannot sleep them through;
Where they harness the swift reindeer
To the sledges, when it snows;

The poet wants to say about the place 'Northland' in the introduction part. In Northland days are usually short and nights are long in winter. People of this area can not sleep comfortablely because it is very cold place. People wake up many times in between. As nights are long they get too much cold. When there will be snow fall people love to go sledging. Children wear heavy woollen and fur clothes which covers them fully from cold. They look like bear cubs.
