TO raise awareness on humanitarian issues and initiatives undertaken by various organisations to alleviate human suffering, Mercy Malaysia together with Sunway University and Jeffrey Cheah Foundation recently hosted the fourth Sultan Nazrin Shah Lecture Series on ‘Migration, Displacement and the Age of Humanitarian Crisis’.

Held at Sunway University, the lecture series saw participants from local and international NGOs, academic institutions and government bodies.

During a pre-panel discussion, Universiti Malaya Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences senior lecturer Dr Roy Anthony Rogers said that it is essential to address issues of migration, displacement and humanitarian crisis to students.

“There is more to life than just attending lectures and handing in assignments.

“Students must be aware of this problem and cannot be detached from the issue,” he added.

Mercy Malaysia president Datuk Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus said the theme of ‘Migration, Displacement and the Age of Humanitarian Crisis’ was chosen for this year’s lecture series to address the critical state of refugees and rise in migration around the world.

“Migration sometimes isn’t just about people fleeing from disasters and conflicts but also from other subtle changes in demographics, society and economics.

“There are more displaced people today for every imagined reason than at any time in the history of humankind,” he added.

William Lacy Swing, keynote speaker at the lecture series, said that such crises are phenomenons we have to learn to deal with.

“We need to learn to manage migration in a way that it is a contributing approach rather than one that leads to discord,” added the International Organisation for Migration director-general.

Sunway Education Group and Sunway University senior executive director Elizabeth Lee commended Mercy Malaysia on its efforts in raising awareness on the prevalent humanitarian crises the world faces today.

“I hope this platform will prove to be a great learning experience for everyone,” she said in her welcoming speech.

Lee said that as the country moves towards the future, there is a need for the youth to be equipped with new knowledge, skills and values in a competitive and global setting.

“It is our aim at Sunway University to empower young people to change and set the way we do things in building that better world,” she added.

Sunway Group chairman and founder Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah and Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah were present at the lecture series.

Cheah presented a donation of RM100,000 to Mercy Malaysia in support of its humanitarian efforts.

Answer:

Explanation:

preliminary evidence from a variety of settings around the world indicates that a focus on the shared human experiences of people affected by armed conflict appears to respond to diverse educational needs in very different social and political settings. Education in humanitarian law fosters increased awareness of humanitarian issues in the face of the threat of armed conflict, encourages a shared sense of citizenship in post-conflict settings through the exploration of minimal international humanitarian norms, and heightens awareness of less contentious means of addressing social and political violence through the examination of various issues of global concern. In post-conflict and divided societies, education based on the exploration of humanitarian issues highlights the common human concerns that arise in times of armed conflict, concerns that are often obscured by politically and ideologically driven analyses. By developing a sense of shared destiny, education in humanitarian law can contribute to strengthening and rebuilding social cohesion.
