by the name firewood the use is pretty clear…the need is for cooking as well as heating…in areas like murree where it is very cold in winter the need for firewood is so high that wood is officially provided at a very low cost…most firewood is collected by women and men from the countryside…at almost no cost…while there is a very large gas supply network in the country the government wishes it too be used for more productive purposes such as producing fertilizer and electricity…electricity is an alternate to firewood just as gas is used for the same purpose…however the problem is that the electricity prices are very high…in winter the use of gas increases and the high cost of gas becomes almost unbearable…given the poverty levels in the country almost 50% of the people cannot afford electricity or gas…however most of the people still try to use gas and electricity. However the lowest 20% of the people just donot have the resources to buy gas or electricity in any form…even in areas like islamabad gathering firewood is the only choice for many people…the government which is more concerned with increasing gas and electricity prices can hardly do very much to change the scenario…LPG cylinders used tobe around 400 rupees but now their prices have doubled…electricity price is affordable for only 200 units and gas is barely affordable just for cooking…gas bills in cities in winter go up to 10000…even relatively low middle class families have electricity bills of 10000…the lack of affordability cause’s people to rob electricity and gas causing further problems and further price increases…the government lacks a basic sense of what the people can afford and what they cannot and how to deal with problem…they donot have the sense to save firewood and provide electricity and gas at affordable prices…
