Overcoming A Challenge

Everyone has faced and will face a challenge in their lifetime. I have had to face many challenges. One of my many challenges was to train for a long period so I could win the Championship.

In my mind, as I trained on the hot gravelly asphalt, I made up that no matter what, I would win the gleaming smooth gold metal and wear its silky ribbon around my neck at the end of the championship whilst standing on the 1st place pedestal high in the air. I had trained vigorously for the following year so my dream could become a reality. I made sure to never miss any of my team's lengthy demanding practices. Every morning before the hot scorching sun was gleaming on us, I went on 5 mile runs with 5lbs ankle weights attached to my ankles to demand more of my effort and increase my stamina. I let out hot steamy breaths as I ran as fast as I could across the sidewalk, so whenever I'm on the track running will seem easy. A week before the championships I had cold refreshing ice cream as a celebration of improving my running skills over the one year time period. With my new-found confidence growing every day I have become sure that I can and will win the championship.

As the annual inter-school athletic meeting arrived, I woke up refreshed and ate my hot steamy breakfast waiting for me on the table and finished it, then I quickly brushed my teeth and exited the bathroom and headed towards the door but paused on the way out as I looked at my family and smiled. "See you soon! Love you!". I then opened the door and closed it behind me as I exited my house quickly, anxious to get my morning run out of the way so I can head to the bus that will take us to the stadium. After my morning run and shower, I arrived at my school and got into the nice air-conditioned bus that would take us to the stadium where we would run and compete for the medal. I stepped onto the bus and nodded to the bus driver as I headed to the back of the vehicle and sat in one of the cool and slightly scratchy chairs. My best friend Rachel sat beside me and we conversed about encouraging things all the way to the stadium. We then exited the bus and grabbed out things, I walked into the large building with her and stopped when I walked in and looked around the packed stadium. My friend laughed and pulled me to my bench, where the coach gave me a pep-talk. I soon spotted my family and teachers sitting in the front row cheering for me to win. I smiled brightly and waved at them as I said to myself... "I will not let them down!"

As I stood behind the white line for my row, feeling the crunch of the gravel beneath my running shoes I took in and let out a deep shaky breath of air to calm my nerves. I looked around at everyone's faces then quickly looked away intimidated. I stretched and loosened up my body for the upcoming run I had to complete shortly. I looked ahead of me as the starting pistol rang out into the stadium leaving behind a small cloud of gunpowder. I launched myself forward as fast as I could and continued to speed up as I ran, not daring to look behind or beside me. My eyes then locked onto and narrowed on the winning ribbon hanging across the track, its silky threads gleaming from the lights overhead. I sped up as I told myself I had to win this race and ran as fast as I could towards it. I ran straight into the silky ribbon and tore it from the posts on either side of the track, feeling its texture run down the front side of my body and fall to the ground. I soon slowed down to a standstill and smiled brightly realizing I had won the tough race. I looked up at the bright reflective glass on the time board and almost cried out for I had set a new national record for the 100-meter sprint! Tears then came to my eyes and I wiped them away from the back of my hand as everyone in the crowd jumped up to their feet and applauded me for my victory. I continued to smile as I felt their stomping and applauding going through my whole body as if the crowd and I were one single being.

As the chilling gold medal slipped around and tickled the back of my neck and I could not help smiling wide at the camera that was live-streaming the exciting event. I spoke to the camera in an encouraging voice, "Everyone! No matter what you are going through, if you just hold onto your dreams and work hard for them, they are sure to come true!"
