Azad a labourer who was working at a site of a multi rise building in
Noida had come four years ago from Motihari in Bihar.
What do you think would have been the causes for his migration to
Noida?
Compare the condition of his village and his dwellings in Noida.
Due to the sudden lockdown in 2020 what were the consequences
he faced?
How do you think he managed them?
What were the problems he faced when he decided to go back to his
village during that time?

Answer:

i) Unemployment is still a major problem in India. For employment people still have to leave their hometowns and shift to big, metropolitan cities. I think this is the same cause for Azad’s migration.

ii) It is pretty obvious that his village being a small piece of land was not as privileged as the urban things he could find in Noida. First things first, there is rarely any employment in Motihari and if there is any it is at the least amount of wage we could think of. While in Noida wages for normal labourers is enough to run a family of 8.

iii) Many villagers who had migrated to metropolitan areas for work faced a lot of problems because of the sudden lockdown, as they lost their jobs and had no place to stay. Also they had not enough grains stored to get them through the lockdown.

iv) I think he would have managed the problem by cutting out his diet and also asking his friends or anyone near him to let him borrow some grains.

v) I believe that he would have managed them by searching for buses that anyhow reach to the village, as the government did supply them with transportation facilities but because the huge amount of people getting a seat in the bus while also maintaining the rules was a big deal.
