Given :- Thieves stole over a million dollars in cash

from a bank in Mumbai.

(a) Over a million dollars in cash from a bank in Mumbai stole.

(b) Over a million dollars in cash from a bank in Mumbai were stolen.

(c) Over a million dollars in cash from a bank in Mumbai have stolen.

(d) Over a million dollars in cash from a bank in Mumbai was been stolen.

Answer :-

Since all options are in the passive form, we have to choose the correct option .

Active voice :- Thieves stole over a million dollars in cash

from a bank in Mumbai.

As we can see that,

  • Stole = 2nd form of the verb { steal , stole , stolen. }
  • Then, we can conclude that, the given sentence is in past indefinite tense .
  • Now, in order to change into passive voice, it will be in past continuous tense . { Next tense. }
  • Then helping verb will be = were .{ since over a million dollars is not countable , we are not sure how much amount was stolen. }
  • Main verb = 3rd form = stolen .
  • Subject becomes object and object becomes subject .

then, we can conclude that,

Passive voice :- Over a million dollars in cash from a bank in Mumbai were stolen.

Note :- Here we didnt use ' by thieves ' since we know who stole the amount . we can remove subject in passive voice .

Therefore, Option (b) Over a million dollars in cash from a bank in Mumbai were stolen is correct answer .
