Given: A retailer sold an article to a customer at a loss of 10%. The customer purchased it for Rs 25,425 including 13% VAT.

To Find : the cost price of the article to the retailer.

Solution:

Let say cost price of the article to the retailer.  = 100X  Rs

retailer sold an article to a customer at a loss of 10%.

Hence loss = 10 %  = (10/100)100X = 10X   Rs

Selling Price before taxes = 100X - 10X = 90X  Rs

13 % VAT = (13/100)90  = 11.7X Rs

Price paid by customer = 90X + 11.7X  = 101.7X Rs

101.7X = 25425

=> X = 250

=> 100X = 25000

Hence the cost price of the article to the retailer. = 25000 Rs
