(b) A simple pendulum is made by suspending a bob of mass 500 g by a
string of length 1m.
i) Calculate the time period at a place where g = 10 ms?
ii) What will be the period when the length of the string is increased
to 4m?

ANSWER

Simple Pendulum is a very small heavy metal bob suspended at a point from a firmly fixed support using a single strand thread so that it oscillates freely. The distance between the point of suspension and centre of bob is called the length of the pendulum.

One oscillation: One complete to and fro motion of the oscillating body is called one oscillation.

Frequency: It is the number of oscillations made by the body in one second.

Time Period: It is the time taken by a body to complete one oscillation.

Hence, the Frequency and Time period are calculated as follows.

Time period = Time taken by the pendulum/Number of oscillations made by the pendulum.

=2s

Frequency =1/Period

=0.5Hz

Hence, the Time period and frequency are 2 seconds and 0.5 Hertz respectively.
