Immadi Pulakeshi was an Emperor from the Chalukya Dynasty. His capital was at Badami in Karnataka. In the same time period Emperor Harshavardhana ruled entire North India from Kannauj. He wanted to expand into the South by defeating Pulakeshi. However Pulakeshi was able to successfully defeat Harshavardhan in the battle on the banks of river Narmada, thus earning him the title Dakshinapatheshwara or the Lord of the South.
Pulakeshi defeated Harshavardhana in the year 618 A.D. Researchers from Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute claim to have fixed the date by decoding the copper plate. The battle occurred between 612 AD and 634 AD, as per the new discovery the victory of Pulikeshi might have taken place exactly in the winter of 618-19 AD.
Pallavas became a major power during the reign of Mahendravarman I (571–630 CE) and Narasimhavarman I (630–668 CE) and dominated the Telugu and northern parts of the Tamil region for about 600 years until the end of the 9th century.
The administration of the Rajput states was based on caste system. Only the people of the higher caste was associated with the administration. Even the king belonged to this caste. The state was divided into a number of units, each under the control of a Mukhiya or leader of the dominant caste.
