'An Uncomfortable Bed' is a  short story written by Guy de Maupassant. The story is about a man who is suspicious that his friends are to make joke of him.

1. The narrator thought that his friends have planned to play a practical joke on him because his friends were fond of practical jokes and has played trick on him before.

2. When his friends gave him a princely reception and fired rifles on his arrival, it aroused great suspicion in narrator that his friends have planned some practical joke on him.

3. After the whole household escorted him to his bedroom, he inspected the whole room for any hidden object to terrify him or make fun of him.

4. The narrator perceived that they might blow the candle off leaving the narrator in dark room, or they might give him acold shower on his bed.

5. The narrator pulled mattress and bedsheet out of the bed and arranged it in the middle of the room facing towards the door.

6. The narrator was awakened from his deep slumber after e felt something heavy fell on him which disabled him to move or get up. He reacted to this by running out in the corridor in his nightshirt in frightened state.

7. The narrator compared the valet and his breakfast falling on him with a sideboard loaded with plates and dishes falling on him and defeaning him.

8. The precaution that the narrator took to avoid being a practical joke of his friends caused him to be a joke before hi friends. The narrator placed his mattress in the middle of the room to avoid any practical joke of is friends of may be giving him cold shower on his bed. But this very arrangement made fun of him  before his friends when a valet tipped over him and he got frightened.
