Bholi had been a victim of bad fortune. First, as a baby she fell and possibly sustained brain damage , because of which she was a very slow learner. Additionally,  when she was still a toddler, smallpox left its marks all over her body, including her face. That left her both mentally and physically affected. As a result, the child was neglected at home and made fun of by others outside home.

Though Bholi’s father was not interested in educating her, he was under pressure and so got her admitted to the school. There, her teacher took Bholi under her wings, and over the years, worked on Bholi. Unknown to everyone including her parents, she had blossomed into a confident young girl.

When her parents were desperately trying to marry her off to a man of her own father’s age, Bholi remained mum. However, when the groom stooped to an insultingly low level, Bholi could not tolerate it anymore and refused to marry him. She displayed ‘neither anger nor hate, only cold contempt’, which shows that she was very much aware of what she was doing and had taken a big decision with a calm mind. Her teacher had indeed groomed her well and had empowered her.

She was no longer Bholi, who was considered ‘a harmless d_mb cow’, but Sulekha, who was strong enough to take decisions for her own self.
