The irony in the story 'The Fortune Teller' is that the fake prediction of the fake astrologer comes out to be true.
- Mrs.MacLeary, wife of the inspector goes to the fake astrologer as an unmarried girl.
- The fake astrologer predicts that Mrs.MacLeary will marry a rich boy who is young and a businessman before the end of the year.
- The astrologer also predicts that an older man will be a hurdle in this marriage and she will move across the ocean after marriage.
- The fake astrologer is punished by the judge for this prediction.
- However, the prediction comes out to be true which is the irony in the story.

The ending of “The Fortune Teller” is a fine example of situational irony—when an event occurs that is opposite of what is expected to happen. Suspicious about the comings and goings at Miss Edith Myers' home, Inspector McCleary assumes that she is the madam of a brothel or even worse, a German spy.
