Martin Luther was basically a religious reformer. In 1917, he published 95 Theses whose ideas criticised the ideas of the Roman Catholic Church. His ideas were considered Heretical. Slowly and slowly his ideas started spreading and eventually got huge support from the common people. One of the copy of his Theses was pasted on the door of the Catholic Church and challenged them for a debate. His ideas criticised some irreligious practises of the Roman Catholic Church. This led to the Protestant Reformation. Hence the Christianity was divided into two sub-groups that is the Catholics and the Protestants.

Hence this was the role of Martin Luther in the Protestant Reformation.
