B. Give reason for the following:
1. The south facing glaciers in the Himalayas
melt faster than those of north flowing
glaciers.
2. Places close to equator have a lower range of
temperature.
3. The vertical rays of the Sun give more heat
than the slanting rays.
4. There is a great difference in temperature
over land and water bodies.
5. The interior parts of the continents have
greater annual range of temperature.

Answer:

1. Buri’s simulations and measured data confirm the suspicion that ice cliffs do contribute significantly to the melting of debris-covered Himalayan glaciers, particularly north-facing ice cliffs.

2.The equator being located between the two tropics to the south and to the north thus leading the sun to oscillates between the two tropics ,making it to remain more or less overhead throughout the year leading to low range of temperature.

3.Vertical rays of sunlight are more effective in producing light and heat than are slanting rays. Because they directly fall from the sun on the Earth. Because the vertical rays fall directly on the earth whereas in slanting rays only a part of the light reaches the earth.

4.We were just talking about temperature differences over land and oceans. To be specific, it can get much hotter and much cooler over the land. The bigger change in temperature is because of how much heat is absorbed by the land (compared to water). Water is constantly moving around, swirling, and mixing in the ocean.

5.The range of temperature is high in the interior of the continent because places located in the interior of the continent are far away from the moderating influence of the sea.

Answer:

1) south-facing cliffs receive much more direct solar radiation than north-facing ones

2)Because the equator is closer to the sun. ... Because the sun's rays hit the earth's surface at a higher angle at the equator. e. Because the sun is always directly overhead at theequator.

3)Because the vertical rays fall directly on the earth whereas in slanting rays only a part of the light reaches the earth.

4)Water has about four times higher heat capacity than land, i.e. it takes much more energy to increase the water temperature and the water temperature will therefore respond slower to temperature changes. ... This temperature difference will have several consequences for the weather near the coast

5)The range of temperature is high in the interior of the continent because places located in the interior of the continent are far away from the moderating influence of the se
