B. Give reasons for the following statements.
1. Diffusion and osmosis are different processes.
2. The concentration of minerals is more inside the root hair than in the soil, still root hair absorbs them.
3. Transpiration is lower on a humid day. 4. Elements like zinc and manganese are known as micronutrients.

Answer:

1)

• Osmosis can occur in liquids only whereas Diffusion can occur in liquids, gases and even in solids.

• Osmosis requires a semi- permeable membrane whereas diffusion doesn't require any such membrane.

• Osmosis is the movement of only solvent particles( as solute particles are large) thru semi permeable membrane whereas In diffusion movement of both all sorts of particles( large or small) takes place.

2)

The concentration of minerals inside the root hair is higher than that of its surroundings yet it absorbs minerals from the soil due to active transport by the root cells. This process requires energy which is consumed in the form of ATP.

3)

Transportation is the process of evaporation of water from the aerial parts of the plants, that is the air takin in moisture ( water vapors) from the plant.

On a humid day, the air is already filled with moisture making it saturated such that it's not able to take more moisture from the plant.

This decreases the rate of transportation on a humid day.

4)

Micronutrients are those nutrients that the body needs in smaller amounts.

Since, the consumption of elements by our body like Zinc and Magnesium is relatively less they fall under the category of micronutrients.
