Answer:

The heat produced was measured to be 180,000 kJ. Calculate the calorific value of the fuel. Answer: Total mass of fuel = 4.5 kg Total heat produced = 180,000 kJ Heat produced by burning 1 kg of fuel = 180,000 kJ/4.5 kg = 40,000 kJ/kg.

Given,

The mass of the fuel burnt = 9 kg

The heat produced on combustion = 30000 kJ.

To Find,

The calorific value of the given fuel.

Solution,

The energy produced in the form of heat, on the combustion of a kilogram of a substance is termed its calorific value.

The calorific value is expressed in terms of kilojoules(kJ).

According to the question,

The heat produced on combustion of 9kg of fuel = 30000 kJ.

Let the heat produced on combustion of 1kg of fuel be x.

The calorific value can be calculated as follows:

⇒ 9kg → 30000kJ

   1 kg→ x

On cross multiplication,

x = \frac{(1)(30000)}{9}

⇒3333.33 kJ.

Henceforth, the calorific value of the given fuel is 3333.33 kJ.
