Philosophers thought it appropriate to focus on physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, sociology, politics, psychology, mathematics, logic, ethics, music, and more. A student of any science was referred to as a "natural philosopher" as recently as the early 19th century.
  • Moral philosophers were the term for experts in ethics. Bunsen burners and other laboratory equipment were frequently referred to be philosophical instruments as late as the 1850s.
