Friction opposes relative motion .

Explanation:

It affects the acceleration of the object by changing the value of nett force acting on it .

E.g.. if value of force is 20N towards east on a 1kg block moving on ground .if the surface is smooth no friction acts on it and it's acceleration is ( m/a)(20/1) I.e. 20m/s^2

And suppose friction acts on it in opposite direction equal to 10N then nett force is equal to 20-10=10 N so acceleration becomes (10/1) I.e. 10m/s^2
