B. Parker Smith had lived happily in a little cottage, in a quiet neighbourhood,
for more than fifteen years. To the surprise of all his acquaintances, he suddenly
decided to shift to another locality, because this place was becoming too
expensive for him.
It all began a year ago when Parker returned home one evening and found a
large dog near his gate. Being fond of animals, he gave it a piece of chocolate
that he happened to have in his pocket. The next evening, the dog was there
again hoping for another piece. In this way, the dog received his daily piece of
chocolate from Parker every evening. Soon, however the dog became greedy
and demanded a larger piece. Within a few months, the dog would not be
satisfied with less than a full slab of chocolate. If ever Parker forgot to bring the
chocolate, the dog would growl angrily and refuse to let him go in. Parker now
realized that he could not return to his own home without first bribing the dog.
Parker had to spend a good part of his salary on chocolates every month, and he
just could not afford it.
So, eventually, Parker decided to look for a house somewhere else.​
