b) Ranjana has two unknown solutions: X, and Y. She performed certain tests with
indicators and observed the following:
(i) Solution X - phenolphthalein remains colourless.
(i) Solution Y + sugar solution
Phenolphthalein turns pink.
(ii) Solution X + Solution Y
Phenolphthalein remains colourless.

Answer:

X- is acidic

Y- is basic

X+Y-is neutral

Explanation:

X-is an acid.Acids are ionic compounds that produce positive hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water. Acids taste sour, conduct electricity when dissolved in water, and react with metals to produce hydrogen gas. Certain indicator compounds, such as litmus, can be used to detect acids. Acids turn blue litmus paper red.

Y- is a base.Bases are ionic compounds that produce negative hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water. Bases taste bitter, feel slippery, and conduct electricity when dissolved in water. Indicator compounds such as litmus can be used to detect bases. Bases turn red litmus paper blue.

Phenolphthalein is a chemical compound with the formula C₂₀H₁₄O₄ and is often written as "HIn" or "phph" in shorthand notation. Phenolphthalein is often used as an indicator in acid–base titrations. For this application, it turns colorless in acidic solutions and pink in basic solutions.
