EXPLANATION:
Kalpana Chawla's was an engineer and an American astronaut, and the first Indian origin woman to travel to space. In the year 2003, as part of a 7 member team, she was selected for the mission of STS-107 program,which was her 2nd flight in the space shuttle Columbia.
The journey of the "space shuttle" was for nearly 15 days, 16 hrs and 34 mins. In the space shuttle the 7 member crew also performed several experiments totalling to about 80 in number in the field of fluid physics, space science, life sciences, material sciences, among others.
On the ill-fated day of Feb. 1, 2003, while the space shuttle was returning to the Earth to land at the Kennedy Space Center 9KSC), it developed serious technical problems and the space shuttle disintegrated killing all the 7 crew members including Kalpana Chawla.
