Explanation:

What is the Cartesian sign conversation used for spherical mirrors ?

This sign convention is known as New cartesian sign convention. Sign is taken as−(negative) from pole of a spherical mirror towards object along the principle axis. This means sign is always taken as−(negative) in front of a spherical mirror.

Direction of incident.

Incident ray is directed towards the centre of curvature because the ray is normal to the spherical mirror, so <i = <r = O

Direction of incident ray?

Notice that the direction of the original incident ray is the same as the direction of the final refracted ray. Put another way, the direction at which the light is traveling when entering the rectangular block of glass is the same as the direction that the light travels after exiting the rectangular block of glass.

In the case of spherical mirror all signs are taken from Pole of the spherical mirror, which is often called origin or origin point. This sign convention is known as New Cartesian Sign .

  • Sign is taken as−(negative) from pole of a spherical mirror towards object along the principle axis. This means sign is always taken as−(negative) in front of a spherical mirror.

Incident ray is directed towards the centre of curvature because the ray is normal to the spherical mirror, so <i = <r = O.
