let cost of pen and pencil be x and y respectively

As cost of pen is thrice the cost of pencil

So x= 3y

x- 3y = 0

Also 2 pens and 3 pencil cost 45

So 2x + 3y = 45

As x= 3y

2( 3y) + 3y = 45

6 y + 9 y= 45

15 y= 45

y= 3

x= 3y = 3(3) = 9

So cost of pen and pencil is 9 and 3

Let the cost of pencil and pen be x and y respectively
ATQ
y = 3x (y is cost of pen and x is cost of pen. Cost of pen is thrice the cost of pencil.)
=> y-3x=0 - (i) equation
3x+2y=45 (3 pens and 2 pencils cost 45) - (ii) equation

Hope it helps
