Soldier A walking in the sand has an advantage over soldier B  because the surface area of soldier A's foot is greater than that of soldier B's foot. Since they have the same mass, soldier A exerts lower pressure on the sand and hence can walk more easily on it.

(because 1 pa = 1 N / 1 m²)
