Tyler had been out all night, and there was no sign of him arriving anytime soon. Hannah sighed. She had been waiting for her brother for almost the entire night, worried he was probably in trouble. This wouldn't be the first time anyway, Hannah thought. She waited for another half an hour, and when she was sure he wasn't going to be back, she got up and shrugged on her coat, irritably muttering to herself about how irresponsible Tyler was. She put on her shoes and opened the door. The last person she expected to see stood there. Tyler.
"What were you doing out so late?" Hannah asked him, shaking him a little by his shoulders. "And what happened to your face?"
Tyler smiled tiredly at his sister as he walked to the kitchen.
"I saw a couple of boys troubling a girl, probably your age," he said, indicating to Hannah. "Obviously I wasn't going to stand by and let that happen. But when I tried to stop them, they punched me a few times and then ran away, like cowards."
Hannah asked. "What about the girl?"
"Oh, I didn't see her face until the goons ran away, but when I did, I was glad I tried to help," Tyler answered.
"Why?"
"It was Ashley," Tyler said.
Hannah got up and hugged her brother, hard. Ashley was Hannah's best friend.
