Organometallic compounds:

  • These substances are defined as having an organic group's carbon atom directly attached to a metal atom.
  • Also include compounds made from elements including boron, phosphorus, silicon, germanium, and antimony that have an organic group attached.

The Preparation of Tertiary Alcohol from Ethyl Acetate, using Organometallic Compound, is describes as follows:

1) Ester goes through Acidic Hydrolysis and gets Converted to Primary Alcohol:

CH_{3}-CO-O-CH_{2}-CH_{3}\ \rightleftharpoons CH_{3}COOH\ +\ CH_{3}CH_{2}OH(1^{o} Alcohol)

2) Primary Alcohol goes under Oxidation and forms Ethanol:

CH_{3}CH_{2}OH \xrightarrow[Oxidation]{PCC} CH_{3}CHO\ (Ethanol)

3) Organometallic and organic magnesium (Mg) derivatives, commonly abbreviated as RMgX, make up Grignard reagent (R is Alkyl & X halide). By combining formaldehyde and the Grignard reagent a primary alcohol can be created. A secondary alcohol is produced when a Grignard reagent is combined with an aldehyde.:

CH_{3}-(C=O)-H\ [Ethanal]\ +\ CH_{3}MgBr[Grignard\ Reagent] \rightarrow Mg(OH)Br\ +\ CH_{3}-(CH-OH)-CH_{3}\ [2^{o} Alcohol]

4) Alkaline potassium permanganate is a strong oxidising agent and is used here to oxidise secondary alcohol to a ketone, i.e. Acetone:

CH_{3}-(CH-OH)-CH_{3}\ [2^{o} Alcohol]\ \xrightarrow[Oxidation]{alk. KMnO_{4}}\ CH_{3}-(C=O)-CH_{3}[Acetone]

5) The ultimate product, isobutyl alcohol, a tertiary alcohol, is created by treating acetone with the Grignard Reagent:

CH_{3}-(C=O)-CH_{3}[Acetone] \xrightarrow[Grignard\ Reagent]{CH_{3}MgBr}\ Mg(OH)Br\ +\ (CH_{3})_{3}-C-OH[3^{o} Alcohol]
