this is because magnitude of south pole as well as north pole is same at bent portion. Now you will be thinking that how can north pole and south pole affect a iron nail. I want to tell you that iron filling is ferromagnetic i.e. it have unpaired elctrons in one of the shell and they move according to the side either north or south and if they are brought to bend portion they will not move toward any side
