ANSWER:-

Patol babu had to give up acting because in 1943,during the Second World War,he lost his nine-year-old job.He had struggled too much to earn a livelihood. He thought that he could never do acting again in his entire life. He became heartbroken. The line "acting had became a thing of the remote past-something which he recalled at times with a sigh" tells us that what Patol Babu thinks about it.
