Shopping in much easier and more economical, if the meals have been roughly planned in advance and we buy only what we have listed. This means resisting the temptation to buy things we do not really need. "Bargain offers are not really bargains if we do not need the items in the first place. "Large economy sizes" are no real economy if we need only a small quantity and the goods will spoil before we can use them all. Modern advertising and packaging have sometimes made foods attractive which do not do us much good. When choosing food, the shopper needs to turn a blind eye to the bright labels and have a good look at the nutritive value of the contents.​
