Once when Iswar Chandra Vidyasa
Vidyasagar was working as a professor in the Sanskrit

but the Principal would not grant his prayer. Iswar Chandra, thereupon
Siculted his letter of resignation stating therein that he considered it a disgrace to
state in service to the distress of his mother's feelings. On reading the letter of
nation, the college authorities were taken aback and had to climb down. Leave
we mmediately granted. Iswar Chandra set out at noon, and walked till evening to
each the bank of the river Damodar. However, it was impossible to cross the rain-
swollen Damodar at night. So Iswar waited. When he wen to the riverside the following
morning, he saw that the river had become stormy and the ferry boats had ceased to
ply the offered the boatmen a large reward, but they dared not make the attempt. So
amped into the river and proceeded to swim across. The men standing on the bank
are amazed and remarked, "The man is bent on ending his litt. But protected by his
