Description:

A delightful poem based on an Indian legend. It doesnot always help to be too generous & hospitable....A kind hearted louse allows a mosquito to invade his private space....the impatient mosquito doesnot pay heed to the louse’s instructions & ultimately the sufferers are the entire louse clan

Perception:

The students:-

i) will be asked to silently read the poem within the time limit of 2 minutes.

ii)after closing the book, they would recollect some of the words & phrases they had read.

iii)the words/phrases would be written on the white board & the students would be asked to tell meanings of the words & would use them in sentences of their own.....discreetly, nipped, pleaded, heeded, hospitality, fatigue, without ado, foiled, dirked,..

iv)will watch a film on the life, style of writing & works of Vikram Seth.

iv)will do a silent reading of the poem & will tell 4 words to describe the louse & 4 words to describe the mosquito

Understanding:

The students will discuss:-

i)if the mosquito had not turned up, would life have continued to be the same for the louse & her family? Why do you think so?

ii)How did the louse & her family live undetected in the king’s bed for so many years?

iii)Why did the louse not want the mosquito to get into the king’s bed for so many years? Do you think her fears were justified?

iv)Why did the mosquito wish to drink the king’s blood?

v)Did the mosquito heed the louse’s warning? What was the result?

vi)Which according to the louse seemed the best time to bite the king?

vii)Do you think the mosquito felt sorry for having caused the death of the louse & her family? Why do you think so

Analysis:

i)The students will identify a) the rhyming words used...louse-house, Creep-asleep, night-flight, pleaded-heeded.....

b)the personification used ....’Creep the louse lived in her ancestral house.’

‘She & her enormous brood’.....’And at last his prayers were heeded.’........

ii)Do you think the louse did right by agreeing to allow the mosquito to stay in the king’s room? What should he have done?....What lesson do you learn from the poem?

Synthesis:

i) Imagine you are the leader of the Palace Louse Community...Prepare a speech to be delivered in the memory of Creep & his family during the Palace Louse Conference.

ii)Write a short poem/few lines to express the thoughts that the mosquito may be humming in the end while on his way.....

Evaluation:

i)Imagine you are Creep, the louse. You are the lone survivor of the king’s slaughter. Your family has been wiped away. Write a diary entry regretting your decision to allow the mosquito to spend the night on the royal bed which led to your family’s doom.

ii)You are the Palace Sanitary Officer. You have been held responsible for not caring about the growing insects in the palace. You have been dismissed from your job.Write a letter to the king, pleading to him to forgive you & telling the measures you’d take to rectify the situation

Creativity:

i)The students will be put in groups & each group will enact out the poem....using their creativity, simple props....( they neednot use the direct words from the poem, but could form their own dialogues.

ii)The students will look for another Indian legend which gives a msg that it doesnot always help to be too generous & hospitable....we should be clever & tactful.
