Birth weight refers to the body weight of a baby at the time of its birth. The  the normal weight of  a new born baby ranges anywhere between 2.5 kilograms and 4.5 kilograms .

Babies born with a weight less than 2.5 kilograms are referred as low weight ones. The primary reason of babies born with low weight can be attributed to premature birth (being born before 37 weeks gestation) or because of a condition called  intrauterine growth restriction.

High weight babies refers to ones born weighing more 4.5 kilograms. It may be due to the amount of weight a mother gains during pregnancy, their parents are large or in some cases due to maternal diabetes.
