production of antibiotics had been one of the most significant discoveries if the 20th century and it has contributed immensely towards human welfare. antibiotic is a chemical substance which is produced by certain microbes and can kill or inhibit the growth of other disease causing microbes. One of the most productive sources of antibiotic drugs has been the genus Steptomyces , a bacterium of which there are many species , from which over 500 antibiotics have been derived. More than 50 of these are commonly used antibiotics which include streptomycin, tetracycline, erythromycin, terramycin etc .. These are widely used to cure a number of infections.
